【本問題】次の日本文を英訳して下さい。
１、いつかお宅に伺ってもいいですか。
（解答例）May I come and see you at your home some time (あるいは
day)?
２、来週の明日までに仕上げられるかもしれません。
（解答例）I may be able to finish it by tomorrow week.
（参考）this day week (先週の今日、来週の今日).
３、外出してもいいが、暗くならぬうちに帰って来なさい。
（解答例）You may go out, but you must come home before (it gets)
dark.
４、午後は雨が降るかもしれないから、傘を持って行った方がいい。
（解答例）We may have rain (あるいはIt may rain) this afternoon, (so I think) you had better take an umbrella with you.
５、君がそう質問するのも無理はない（～may well）。
（解答例）You may well ask that.
６、明日は日曜だ。寝坊していいよ。
（解答例）Tomorrow is Sunday. You can sleep late.
（参考）Do you sleep late in the mornings?
７、犬は飼い主の心（thoughts）を読み、変わり動く気分（varying
moods）を理解する能力を持っている。
（解答例）The dog can read his master’s thoughts and can understand his varying moods.
（参考）Our moods keep varying from moment to moment.
８、一体どうして私にそんなことができましょう。
（解答例）How on earth can I do (あるいはyou expect me to do) such a thing?
９、友達はいくら大切にし（treasure）てもし過ぎることはない。
（解答例）We cannot treasure our friends too much.
10、初めは彼の言うことが分からなかった。（東京工業大学）
（解答例）①At first I could not understand him.
②I could not make out his meaning.

「忘れたはずはないよ。今朝、会った時、必ず来ると言っていたもの。」
（解答例）”Ishii has not come (あるいはturned up) yet. He may have forgotten about today’s meeting, I am afraid.”
“Oh, no, he cannot have forgotten (about it). When I met (あるいは
saw) him thins morning, he told me he would come without fail.”
14、これからはもっと気をつけなさい。
（解答例）You must be more careful in future.
15、世間にはいろいろな人間がいる。その誰とも一緒にやって行かなければならないんだよ。
（参考）We all have to put up with some unpleasantness in conducting the business of day-to -day living.
（解答例）There are all kinds of people in the world. And you have to
get on (あるいはlive) with them all.
（解説）mustはpresent obligation (現在の義務・必要性)を表わすのに対して、habitual obligation (習慣的義務・必要性)をhave toで表わすことがあります。
I must be going now. It’s getting late.
I have to go to work every morning at eight.
ただし、次のような場合は、「外的事情」からのobligationを示します。
I had to do what I did. There was no other way.（ああしたのはそうせざるを得なかったからだ。他に方法が無かった。）
16、今日は学校へ行かなくてもいい日なんでしょう、どう。日曜日ですよ。
（解答例）You haven’t to go to school today, have you? It’s Sunday.
（参考）How much of the way did you have to stand up?
17、彼は現在の地位を獲得するのに（to attain his present position）、一歩一歩戦い（fight every inch of his way）取らねばならなかったのである。
（解答例）He has had to fight every inch of his way to attain his present position (あるいはto get where he is).
18、4年間の大学生活中に少なくとも2つの外国語を読み、書き、かつ話す能力を養わねばならない。（九州大学）
（解答例）During the four years of college (あるいはuniversity) life, we must develop reading, writing, and speaking ability in (あるいはacquire a reading, writing, and speaking knowledge of) at least two foreign
languages.
19、私は6、7時間も眠ったのでしょう。目を覚ますと、太陽は西に傾いて
（slanting towards the west）いましたから。
（解答例）I must have slept for six or seven hours, for the sun, when I awoke, was slanting towards the west (あるいはwestering).
20、私をさぞ無礼な奴とお思いになったことでしょう。
（解答例）I’m afraid you must have thought me (a) very rude (fellow).
21、我々は高い理想（a lofty ideal）を持つべきであるが、それを短時日に達成しようとあせって（be impatient to～）はならない。（東京農工大学）
（解答例）We ought to have a lofty ideal, but we should not be
impatient to realize it quickly.
22、常識から考えたって、それぐらいのことは分かったはずなのに。
（ヒント）「常識（common sense）」を主語にします。
（解答例）(Your) Common sense ought to have told that.
23、彼が試験に失敗したとは驚きました。当然、合格すべき男だったのです。
（解答例）I am surprised that he should have failed (あるいはat his
failure) in the examination; he ought to have succeeded.
（参考）I’m surprised at you. How could you have done such a thing? (あるいはI’m surprised that you should have done such a thing.)
24、「君のあの行為は許せない（inexcusable）な。」
「結論に飛びつく前（jump to conclusions）に、私の言葉を最後まで聞いて（hear me out）下さってもいいでしょうに。」
（解答例）”That conduct of yours was inexcusable.”
“Before jumping to conclusions, you might at least hear me out (あるいはto the end).”
25、私は大人になり（to be grown up）たくない。今のまんま（just as I
am）でいた方がいいな。
（解答例）I don’t want to be grown up. I would rather be (あるいはstay) just as I am.
26、君、そんなに急ぐ必要は無いよ。その時計は20分以上も進んでいるのです。
（解答例）You need not be in such a hurry. The clock is more than
twenty minutes fast.
27、よくも僕のことを卑怯者呼ばわりができるよ。
（解答例）How dare you call me a coward!
（参考）Feeling ashamed, I did not dare to look my mother in the face.（恥ずかしくて母の顔がまともに見れませんでした。）
28、このドアは内側へだけ開きます。
（解答例）This door will only open inwards.
29、最初は嫌だと言ったのですが、彼はどうしても嫌という返事では承知し（take no for an answer）なかったのです。
（解答例）I said no at first, but he would not take no for an answer.
30、一日中（for a whole day）、一言も言わないことも、彼にはよくありました。
（解答例）Often for a whole day he would not say one word.
31、お気持ちが悪い（do not feel well）のなら、すぐ医者に見てもらった方がよいでしょう。（大阪大学）
（解答例）If you don’t feel well, you had better see a doctor at once.
【参考用基本文例】「助動詞」の主な用法
１、自分の行為に対しては責任を取らねばならぬ。
You must be responsible for your conduct.
２、そんないい機会を逃してはいけない。
You must not miss such a good chance.
３、もうお帰り？お出になったばかりなのに。
Must you go? You've only just come!
（参考）次の例のmustには、「（それじゃこっちに都合が悪くて）困るんだがなあ）」の感じがこもります。
Can you come today or must it be tomorrow?
As soon as I have recovered from my illness, what must I do but break my leg?
４、すっかりやり直さねばならないだろうね。
You will have to do it all over again.
（参考）You've going to have to do something about it.（～ねばならなくなるよ）
（解説）「すべきことはただ一つ」、つまり、「～するだけでよい」はhave
only to ~で表します。
You have only to look at her to see that she is not what people say she is.（顔を一目見さえすれば、世間で言っているような女性でないことが分かります。）
「まだこれから～せねばならぬ」はhave yet to ~。
You have yet to learn how to disagree without being disagreeable.（不快な感じを与えずに）
５、バスに乗りそこね、次のまで半時間待たねばならなかった。
I missed my bus and had to wait half an hour for the next.
（解説）この現在・過去形の「否定・疑問」にはdo, does, didを添えます。
You don't (あるいはdidn't) have to resign, do (あるいはdid) you?
６、やむを得ず、蔵書は全部処分いたしました。
I have had to sell all my books.
７、偉大な本はそれを読む人に強い影響を与えずにはおかないであろう。
Great books must inevitably have a strong influence upon those who
read them.
（解説）このmustはAll men must die.のそれで、inevitablyを表わします。「現在」についてのことなら、次のようになります。
He must be mad to do a thing like that.
８、私達の手紙は途中できっと行き違いになったのでしょう。
Our letters must have crossed each other on the way.
９、「金を少し貸してもらえないかな。」「何に要るんだい。」
"Can you lend me some money?" "What do you want it for?"
（解説）Could you ~ ?とすればless blatant、つまり丁寧に響きます。しかし、借金常習者でしたら、I am sorry but I have no money to lend you. I am as hard up as you are.と言って逃げます。
10、金で全てが買えるわけではない。
Money can't buy everything.
（参考）There are some things money can't buy.
11、自分で物を考える習慣を身につけるのに早すぎることはない。
You can't form the habit of thinking for yourself too early.
（解説）このfor oneselfはindependentlyの意味です。
（参考）The door closed of itself behind me.（ひとりでに）
Travel, they say, is an education in itself.（旅はそれ自体一つの教育だと人は言う。）
12、ロンドンには見る所がとても多いですから、一日や二日でその全部を見物するのは無理でしょう。
There are so many places to see in London. I'm afraid you'll no be able to see all of them in a day or two.
（参考）次例におけるcapable ofはableとは少々使い方が違います。
He is capable of doing (あるいはwill do) anything for money.
He is incapable of betraying others. = It is not in his nature to be
treacherous.
13、先日お話した家を私は買い取ることができました。
I have been able to buy the house I spoke of the other day.
（解説）現在、その所有者であることを示しています。
I don't feel able to do that.
14、口を開ければ必ず何かイヤミを言わずには済まされない女性だった。
She could not speak without saying something disagreeable.
（解説）ある能力があって、あることを遂行したことはcouldではなく、
managed to do, succeeded in doing、またはその行為を表わす動詞を過去形にして表現します。
I managed to scrape (あるいはscraped) through the examination, much to the surprise of my teacher.
couldは「～する能力があった」ことを言います。
Already at the age of three he could play difficult pieces of music on the piano.
15、一体君は誰なんだ。
Who can you be?
（解説）Who may you be?なら丁寧な語気です。
16、彼を怒らすようなこと、一体何を言ったのかな。
What can I have said to offend him?
（参考）I can't (あるいはcouldn't) imagine what I said (あるいはhad
said) to offend him.
17、本当なもんか、そんなウワサは。
The rumor can not be true.
（参考）The rumor must be false.
18、彼がその事実を知らなかったはずはない。
He cannot have been ignorant of the fact.
（参考）He must have known it all along.（初めっから）
19、「先生、質問をしてもいいですか。」「いいとも。」
"May I ask a question, sir?" "Certainly, you may."
（解説）mayは「していい」ですが、「～してもいいのに（しないとはけしからん）」の含意はmightです。
You might close the door behind (あるいはafter) you.（ドアを閉めて出て行ってもいいんだぞ。）
You might at least have said you were sorry.（せめて「悪かった」と一言言ってもよかったな。）
20、彼が子息を自慢するのも無理ない。
He may well be proud of his son.
（解説）このwellはwith good reason, justifiablyの意味です。
21、月にかさが雨または雪になる可能性があります。
Rainy weather or snow may come when there is a ring around the
moon.
22、そう言ったかもしれないが、覚えはないなあ。
I may have said so, but I don't remember.
23、彼はまだ帰っていないかもしれない。
He may not have returned yet.
24、君、奴に金を貸すくらいなら捨ててしまう方がマシだよ。
You might as well throw your money away as lend it to him.
25、正直者に繁栄あれ。
May honest folk prosper.
26、「そこにはバスが行っていますか。」
「ええ、しかし、乗る必要はありません。歩いて楽に往復できます。あまり遠くありません。」
"Is there a bus going there?"
"Yes, there is, but we needn't take it. We can walk there and back
easily. It isn't very far."
（参考）次例のneedは本動詞です。
He doesn't need to earn a living. His parents left him more then enough to live on.
What you need is a good night's sleep.
Helicopters doesn't need runways for taking off or landing.
27、結果から見れば、心配しなくてよかったが。
I need not, as it happened, have worried at all.
28、友達はお互いに助け合うべきです。
Friends ought to help one another.
29、彼のことをそんな風に言うべきではないな。
You ought not to speak of him in that way.
（参考）You have no right to speak of him in that way.
30、そもそも彼など信用すべきじゃなかったのですよ。
You ought not to have trusted him in the first place.
（参考）You made a great mistake in having trusted him at all.
31、他人を軽率に判断することは慎むべきだ。
You should refrain from judging others hastily.
（参考）Don't let us be in a hurry to condemn him.
32、しかしだ、お前の年頃でそんなことを考えていてはいかんな。
But at your age, you shouldn't be thinking of any such thing.
33、では私はどうすべきだったとお考えですか。
Then what do you think I should have done?
34、あなたのように切れる人が、もっとマシな仕事についていないのはおかしいよ。
It seems odd to me that anyone as smart as you shouldn't have a
better job.
（解説）「意外」と思う気持ちがshouldを引き出します。
What do you want (What should you want, How should I know) all that money for?
35、人の口に戸は立たぬ。黙らせておく方法は無い。
People will talk. You can't keep them from talking.
36、彼は万事に我意を通そうとする。
He will have his own way in everything.
（解説）これをmustにすれば、「～せねば気が済まぬ」という意味になります。
37、言いたいことは沢山あったが、言葉がどうしても口に出て来なかった。
I wanted to say so many things, but the words would not come to my
lips.
（解説）「それを言うのに必要な」の意味でtheをつけます。
"Oh, but Earnest ―really―!" She could find no words to express what
she felt.
38、彼女は薄暗い部屋で何時間も黙って、じいっとただ座っていることがよくあった。
She would sit for hours silent and motionless, doing nothing, in a half
dark room.
39、不正な手段で金を得るよりは、私は貧乏でいた方がいい。
I would rather remain poor than get money by dishonest means.
（参考）I would much (far) rather have stayed behind, but I had no
choice but to go with him.
40、私に向かってよくもそんな口のきき様が。
How dare you speak to me like that!
（参考）dareは次例では本動詞扱いです。
All my life I have wished to have a house of my own, but I didn't dare
to hope I ever should.
41、同じ行くなら、今すぐの方がいいよ。
If you are going at all, you had better go at once.
（参考）You might as well start at once.
42、君、急いだ方がよくはないですか。
Hadn't you better make haste?
43、社会のためには、こんな連中は生まれて来ない方がよかったのだ。
For the good of society such men had better not have been born.
