【世界遺産英語⑥】ラパ・ヌイ国立公園

このシリーズではユネスコ世界遺産の英語ページから、おもしろい英語表現や自分が知らなかった単語をピックアップしています。

第4回の今回はラパ・ヌイ国立公園。

この言葉はあまり聞き覚えないかもしれませんが、皆さんご存じのモアイがいるイースター島の事です。

「ラパ・ヌイ」は現地の方の言葉のようですね。

それでは英文をどうぞ。

Rapa Nui, the indigenous name of Easter Island, bears witness to a unique cultural phenomenon. A society of Polynesian origin that settled there c. A.D. 300 established a powerful, imaginative and original tradition of monumental sculpture and architecture, free from any external influence. From the 10th to the 16th century this society built shrines and erected enormous stone figures known as moai, which created an unrivalled cultural landscape that continues to fascinate people throughout the world.

indigenous

最初から少し難しい単語が出てきましたね。

これは英検準1級から出てくる単語で「（その土地）固有の・先住の」という意味です。

例えば以下のようにも使えますね。

Due to a number of indigenous plants, Ogasawara Islands were registered on the World Heritage List in 2011.

（多くの固有植物により、小笠原諸島は2011年に世界遺産に登録された。）

bear witness

bearはご存じ「クマ」という名詞の意味もありますが、動詞では「出産する・（実を）結ぶ・（義務・責任などを）負う」など様々な意味があります。

そして witness は名詞で「目撃者」、動詞で「目撃する」という意味です。

ここから bear witness で「証言する」という意味になるようですね。

bear「（義務・責任などを）負う」＋ witness「目撃」という事で、「目撃の責任を負う」＝「証言する」というニュアンスなのかもしれません。

ただ今回の訳では、別に法廷にモアイが立っているわけでもないので、「表しています」くらいでいいんじゃないかなと思います。

fascinate

fascinate は「（人を）魅了する、（人の）心を捉える」という英検2級から出てくる単語です。

英検ライティングでは以下のように使えるかなと思います。

The study of Artificial Intelligence fascinates many young people, so more such classes and courses should be provided at universities.

（人工知能の研究は多くの若者を魅了するので、そのような授業やコースが大学で提供されるべきである。）

ラパ・ヌイとはイースター島を指す先住民の言葉で、その島は独自の文化現象を表しています。紀元後300年頃に定住したポリネシア人が、外部からの影響を受けずに、力強くも想像力に富んだ、独創的な巨大彫刻と伝統建築を作り上げました。10世紀から16世紀にかけて人々は神殿を建設し、モアイとして知られる巨大な石像を建て、世界中の人々を魅了し続ける無類の文化的景観を作り上げました。

unrivalled は以前も紹介しましたが、rivalled(匹敵する)のunなので「無類の・無敵の」という感じです。
