【世界遺産英語②】マチュ・ピチュの歴史保護区

このシリーズではユネスコ世界遺産の英語ページから、おもしろい英語表現や自分が知らなかった単語をピックアップしています。

第2回の今回はマチュ・ピチュの歴史保護区。

ペルーにある有名な世界遺産ですね。

それでは、この遺産の説明文をどうぞ。

Machu Picchu stands 2,430 m above sea-level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. The natural setting, on the eastern slopes of the Andes, encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna.

escarpment

読み進めていくとココが知らない単語としてぶつかるところではないかなと思います。

escarpmentは「絶壁」という意味で、今回はrock escarpmentなので「岩の絶壁」ですね。

continuousはご存じcontinueの形容詞なので、「連続した、途切れの無い」という感じです。

encompass

これは実は英語のニュース記事などを読んでいる時によく遭遇する単語です。

意味は「取り囲む・含む」という感じで、surround や include に似ていますね。

今回はincludeの意味があてはめやすいかなと思います。

flora and fauna

floraは「植物相」、faunaは「動物相」という意味です。

「相」と言われると分かりづらいですが、plant と animal みたいな考え方で良いと思います。

この2つはセットで英検1級のリーディングでよく出てくるので、受験される方は頭の片隅にでも。

熱帯山地林に海抜2,430mでそびえたつマチュ・ピチュには美しい環境が広がっており、おそらくインカ帝国で最も高度な都市設計と言えるでしょう。巨大な壁や傾斜、段々畑などが永遠と続く岩の絶壁から自然に切り取られたような光景を映しています。アンデス山脈の東斜面はアマゾン川上流域に面しており、多種多様な動・植物相を見る事ができます。

settingには「環境」という意味もあり、rampは「傾斜」、basinは「流域」という意味です。
