パス単には「権利放棄書」とだけ書いてあって、よく意味がわからなかったので調べてみて、少しだけわかった気がしました。

waiver

(3) A waiver is when a person, government or organization agrees to give up or says that people do not have to obey a particular rule. (コウビルド英英辞典)

→権利放棄書の意味はおそらく2番ですね。実際に他の英文を探してみる中で、この2番の意味に当てはまらないものがいくつか見受けられました。おそらく3番の意味だと思います。それが次の英文です。

例文

空軍は昨年、マリファナに含まれる活性化合物であるTHCの薬物検査で陽性と判定された志願者に、再試験と入隊の機会を与える新しい試験的プログラムを発表した。

→allowという単語に、waiverと似た意味を感じます。何かを許す、免除する　というニュアンスです

But the Air Force Recruiting Service told Military.com on Tuesday that, within the first year of the program, the service encountered triple that number -- granting 165 waivers after candidates retested and were shown to be free of THC.

しかし、空軍の採用担当部局が火曜日にMilitary.comに語ったところによると、このプログラムの最初の1年間で、その3倍にあたる165人の志願者が再試験を受け、THCが検出されなかったため、免除されたとのことである。

→ここではwaiversという単語が使われています。grant 165 waiversで「165人に免除を与えた・認めた」のような意味になると思います。

もう一つわかりやすい英文がありました。Chat GPTさんからです。「このようなwaiverを含めた例文を２、３つ紹介してもらえますか？」と尋ねたら、いくつか紹介してくれました。以下画像です

・これはテーマが学生ということで、自分にもわかりやすかったです。なるほどLoan（借金）をWaiver（免除する）のかぁ！というふうに直感的に理解できました。

・to alleviate the financial burden on college graduates、という部分もこのwaiverの目的が記されていてわかりやすいです

・eligible individuals can have a portion of their student loans forgiven.の文では forgivenという単語が使われています。forgiveには「免除する」の意味があるようですね。なるほど。forgiveをコウビルド英英辞典でひくと、次のような文がありました。

If an organization such as a bank forgives someone's debt, they agree not to ask for that money to be repaid.

銀行などの組織が誰かの借金を”forgive”する場合、彼らはそのお金の返済を求めないことに同意する。
