【世界遺産英語⑩】ケルン大聖堂

GWで時間が空きましたが、第10回の今回はケルン大聖堂です。

世界最大のゴシック様式の建築物。

いつか肉眼で見て、その大きさに圧倒されたいなぁと思っています。

それでは英語の解説文をどうぞ。

Begun in 1248, the construction of this Gothic masterpiece took place in several stages and was not completed until 1880. Over seven centuries, successive builders were inspired by the same faith and a spirit of absolute fidelity to the original plans. successive

パワプロクンを遊んだことある方ならsuccess（サクセス）をご存じでしょう。

「成功」という名詞の意味ですが、これにダマされることなかれ。

successiveは形容詞ですが、「連続する・代々の」という意味です。

動詞succeedには「成功する」の他に「～の後を継ぐ」という意味があるので、こちらの形容詞という感じですね。

fidelity

「忠実・忠誠心」という意味で、少し聞きなれない単語ですが、英検準1級レベルの単語とされています。

もし英検ライティングで使うなら以下のような感じでしょうか。

Thanks to AI technology, the fidelity of replica is high therefore, distinguishing between the genuine and the counterfeit is difficult.

（AI技術のおかげでレプリカの忠実度が高いので、本物と贋作を見分けるのは難しい。）

intrinsic

これも英検準1級レベルの単語で、「本来備わっている・固有の」という形容詞です。

inherent や indigenous と似ていますね。

英文のように intrinsic value（本質的な価値）という感じで value が続く事が多いようです。
