【世界遺産英語③】モン-サン-ミシェルとその湾

このシリーズではユネスコ世界遺産の英語ページから、おもしろい英語表現や自分が知らなかった単語をピックアップしています。

第3回の今回はモン-サン-ミシェルとその湾。

フランスにある有名な世界遺産で、教会としてはもちろん、その立地から一時は牢獄としても使われたようです。

それでは、この遺産の説明文をどうぞ。

Perched on a rocky islet in the midst of vast sandbanks exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany stand the 'Wonder of the West', a Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St Michael, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its great walls. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, the abbey is a technical and artistic tour de force, having had to adapt to the problems posed by this unique natural site.

perch

いきなり聞きなれない単語が出てきましたね。

perchは名詞で「（鳥の）止まり木」、動詞で「（鳥が止まり木に）止まる、羽を休める」という意味があります。

ですが今回のようにモノが主語の場合は「高い場所に存在する」というようなニュアンスになるようです。

ちなみにここの文法は、同じ主語を2回も言うのが面倒くさいから片方省略した、分詞構文というやつですね。

abbey

この単語は「修道院・教会」という意味なので、世界遺産を学習しているとよく目にします。

ちなみにその後に出てくるarchangel St Michaelは「大天使 聖ミカエル」。

archは接頭語で「第一の」という意味ですが、ここから日本語訳では「大」がよく使われますね。

archbishop（アークビショップ）が「大司教」なのと同じです。

tour de force

これは英語ではなくフランス語なのですが、自分が分からなかったので取り上げました。

「傑作・大作」という意味で、英語で feat of strength（力の偉業）という意味らしいです。

ノルマンディー・ブルターニュ間の激しい潮流にさらされるも、岩々しい小島にそびえたつ西の絶景モン-サン-ミシェル。大天使聖ミカエルに捧げられたゴシック様式のベネディクト修道院とその巨大の壁のもとに広がる村が特徴的です。独特な自然環境から発生する問題に適応しつつも、11世紀から16世紀にかけて建設されたその修道院は、建築技術と芸術性の傑作とされています。

少し意訳したところがありましたが、意味はこんな感じですね。

一行目が長いですが、こういう場合は無理せずどこかでバッサリと切れば、相手に伝わる分かりやすい訳が作れると思います。
